UE Boom 2 vs UE Boom 3 – Overview

Ultimate Ears recently announced that Boom 3 and Megaboom 3 will be superseding the previous models. We’ve already established why Megaboom 3 is better than the Megaboom, and now it’s time to analyze the battle between Boom 2 and Boom 3 and see if it’s worth upgrading the predecessor with the brand new speaker. We’ll review the design and evaluate the new features and audio performances of these exceptional speakers.

1. Design

Ultimate Ears has a long track record of having beautifully designed products, so it would be a surprise if things were any different this time around. Boom 3 and Megaboom 3 are similar in terms of visual appearance and, without a doubt, they both look brilliant. The cylindrical shape is maintained along with UE’s iconic plus and minus buttons, but this time the company decided to change the fabric.

And, speaking of buttons, we have a new button on the top of the speaker; apart from the Power and Bluetooth pairing buttons, there is now a ‘Magic’ button (whose capabilities will be explained in some detail in the Features section below). The new fabric feels more comfortable to the touch, and the best part is that it’s more durable than that of its predecessor. Also, in order to let the speaker deliver 360-degree spatial sound, UE has entirely redesigned the front of the speaker. We all know that Boom 2 came in a choice of many colors, and Boom 3 is currently available in seven attractive colors: Blue, Black, Red, Purple, Denim, Cloud and Storm. While Purple seemed to be the color of choice for Megaboom, Blue seems to be the favorite for fans of Boom 3. What about the dimensions? Well, there is no big difference between the sizes of these two: Boom 2’s dimensions (height & diameter) were 180 x 67 mm; Boom 3 is a little bit bigger at 184 x 73 mm. Being slightly bigger in size means slightly more weight, so this time Boom weighs 608g instead of 548g. But weight won’t be a big issue, especially now that UE has added the Hang Loop, which definitely makes it easier to carry the speaker. To sum up, Boom 3 looks more solid than its predecessor.

2. Features

First of all, UE’s new Boom 3 and Megaboom 3 are IP67 certified, which means they’re even more weather sealed and water-resistant than their predecessors. Boom 2 can float in water for 30 minutes; Boom 3 can do the same, but, in addition, if plunged in water (up to a depth of 1 meter) it will immediately come back to the surface, where it will float.

So they’re still water-resistant, and now UE is claiming its new model can withstand dirt as well as salt water, so it doesn’t matter if you’re on the ocean or in the desert, Boom 3 is almost indestructible and definitely has more durability than Boom 2. In terms of more playtime or less charging time, there is no upgrade from UE this time around. Just like Boom 2, its successor has 15 hours of battery life and needs less than 2.5 hours to be fully charged.

So, what is the Magic button? You can pause/continue to play the music simply by pressing; and by double pressing, it will skip a song. But what makes it really a ‘Magic’ button is that, if you press and hold, you can turn on the speaker, connect it to a smartphone or even access the four different playlists on your Apple Music or Deezer Premium accounts. Programming it that way is super easy and the App will help you to get there. Once you’ve established the ‘contact’ with your playlists, you won’t ever have to pick up your phone: Simply press and hold the Magic button and you can enjoy your music world as long as you want it.

Unlike Boom 2, its successor doesn’t have the old features like Speakerphone and Voice Assistant. But one very handy upgrade for UE’s fans is that the charging port is now placed at the back of the speaker, not at the bottom of it. It means you can charge the speaker via Micro-USB and still use it in every way possible – it won’t tip over or cause you any inconvenience, like before.

So UE also gives us new ways to charge the speaker. The charging dock doesn’t come with the product, but it’s a cool option/add-on for charging your music player that way. The charging dock is not only compatible with Boom 3 – it also can also charge Blast, Megablast and Megaboom 3. If you’re keen on creating a ‘smart-home’, then it’s also an ideal add-on from that point of view.

3. Performance

Let’s be totally clear – the Boom 2 gives exceptional sound quality, and maybe even better sound quality than many other competitive speakers in the market. That’s because it has 360 degrees of spatial sound, which can deliver its amazing audio in every corner equally. The Megaboom 3 was able to outscore its predecessor because it now has a bigger woofer, but we can’t say the same of Boom 3.

Yes, it’s true that after completely redesigning the surface, the Boom 3 and Megaboom 3 are able to deliver the immersive audio evenly in all directions, and yes, you can notice the small difference between UE Boom 2 vs UE Boom 3, but still, it’s not a significant difference. After carrying out some tests, it’s clear that Boom 2 and Boom 3 are almost identical in terms of sound quality. To put a positive spin on it: Boom 2 was already able to deliver high-quality sound, even outdoors. Surely Boom 3 should be able to supersede this, rather than just match it? However, the fact is that Boom 3 sounds amazing, and that’s all that matters.

Users of the Boom, Boom 2, Boom 3, Megaboom and Megaboom 3 will be compatible with the App – Boom – and, with such seamless speaker compatibility, you can really get the party going. You won’t have to throw or give away your old UE speakers – simply add them to your repertoire with the new speakers and make your party louder.

It’s anticipated that Ultimate Ears will add new features to the Boom App and let the users experience what the union of UE speakers can lead to.
